Why do I love Industrial Design?

Apart from it being the discipline that turns dreams and visions into reality, my story with finding Industrial Design comes from a more personal journey.

I started at RISD by transferring into the fine arts, an education experience I found full of subjectivity, isolation and criticism. Over and over, my projects were not well received, and no budding friendships were able to help me through this. But I made my decision to leave after the critique of one very specific project. In short, the objective was to study and object, and reimagine it into a sculpture. I chose what is still today my favorite product, a Filimin Friendship Lamp and created a sculpture that focused on human connection with two light poles that only illuminated if two people held hands. The challenge of engineering the sculpture and the feat of learning something new gave me unparalleled  satisfaction upon the completion of this work. However, on the day of the critique I only remember my peers and professors commenting on the electrical tape on the floor between the poles. This crushing critique was the moment I decided to pursue a new career that shared my interests.

Within the first week of being introduced to Industrial Design, I was nothing short of in love with the career. Every decision is driven by research and cooperative team building, to at the end of the day, design products that will make someone's life better. I have found my niche in Industrial Design by pursuing Medtech and wearables specifically in the Geriatric and medical care spaces. My perfect process is to sit down with my users, hear their stories, and work with them throughout the phases of testing and iterating. Through this, I push to create solutions that not only accomplish their original task, but address bigger and more dire issues by means of domino effect. Address the small thing that can stop the bigger problem. Design the little things that make the biggest differences.
