THE TAKE APART

For my first delve into SOLIDWORKS, I wanted to explore redesigning an object that I owned. This MPOW portable speaker was a hand-me-down from my dad, and not long after receiving it, I realized why he had been so easy to part with small speaker. Apart from the actual product not having wonderful sound quality, I found that the design was hardly portable. I was jagged and did not feel comfortable to hold or against body in a bag. I decided to redesign this speaker to make it more comfortable, ergonomic, and overall more attractive.

Taking apart the speaker I discovered its key parts and components for it to function. I took note of the wiring and placement of its driver, Lithium battery, Main mother board and the dotter board and the bus between them.

REDESIGN INITIAL SKETCHES

The redesigned speaker would contain all the original parts, so it would be a similar scale to the original product. I wanted to explore adding an attachment clip to the speaker so that it could be easily clipped to the outside of a bag. The original design was very boxy and had sharp defined corners. I wanted to soften the form to make it more enjoyable to hold and experience.

Another set of designs I explored was if I wanted to make this speaker more of a small desk speaker. I sketched out some designs with more defined bases and played with the shape of the speaker with this in mind. I decided to go further with the "teardrop" design, I found the shape after receiving overwhelming positive feedback from peers.

RECONSTRUCTION AND EXPLORING ANIMATION IN SOLIDWORKS

After completing the form of the object, I decided to reconstruct the internal components to scale to make sure the would fit within the new form I had designed. I wanted to show the construction of the product coming together.

In this project, I also had to consider how the clip would function and where the latch would need to go.

This project was suppose to be an introductory project to start thinking about manufacturing and where we would have support material and split lines in our designs.
