ERGO TAPE ROLLER

"Question...

why don't we have more simplistic, soft, ergonomic tape rollers?"

"what could someone use for hours a day without their hands hurting?"

form discovery

INITIAL INSPIRATION

At the beginning of this project, I decided to find a variety of forms to draw from for inspiration. I knew I wanted to explore a more Ergonomic design for a tape dispenser. So I thought to draw from natural forms and soft, modular work found in our RISD Museum. I enjoyed the extreme intricate detail found on this Sputnik Sea Urchin, as well as its natural curves and patterns. I also was interested in how this vase from the museum explored modularity, pattern and depth.

STUDY SKETCHES

At the early stages of the project, I further explored the inspirational forms and produced some sketches thinking about some of the key components I found appealing of each.

PRODUCT CONCEPT

After careful form study, I decided to move into the next phase of my project and produce several concept sketches of the tape dispenser. I wanted to think of as many different concepts as I could, so I produced some quick sketches portraying different ways of interacting with the product.

At this phase, I also had to consider my user and the use case for the tape dispenser. Would this be used for more craft based projects or would it be used for heavy duty tasks? I decided to push for an ergonomic heavy duty tape dispenser that drew form inspiration from the objects I had studied previously.
